Canteens

After over 30 years of crafting beautiful quality tin products, our Master Tinsmith has retired.

As a result of decreased demand for tin products and rising costs of materials we are discontinuing our tin products.

Please call before ordering to see IF we still have what you are looking for in stock.

Canteen Care

* After each use rinse your canteen with warm water and baking soda. Store your canteen with the cork out. This will help prevent rust and corrosion.
* We have not affixed the canteen strap on drum canteens because many wish to paint their canteen. This will also give you the ability to adjust the strap length according to your needs.
* We recommend that you use only distilled water in your canteen. Tap water contains many minerals that will promotes rust rather than prevent it.

Federal Regulation Canteens

#404      US Regulation Pattern 1858 "Smooth side" Canteen              $110.00

The first "modern" canteen to be ordered in quantity for the Army. In 1858, 22,000 were authorized to be made with sky blue covers. Wartime production produced sky blue, dark blue, tan and gray covers. A 75" sling, 3/4 inch wide, was specified. (Web slings are not correct for these canteens.) This particular canteen is copied from an original in our collection. The original is sky blue in color with a cork and chain and cotton sling. It has New York Inspector marks.

This reproduction canteen is provided with the cork and chain, wool cover, and cotton sling. (Specify if you wish to purchase the canteen without the hole for cork and chain on the bracket. We can make them without if you prefer. There will be a short wait as the canteens in stock will have the hole in the bracket.)
Holds approximately 42 oz.

These canteens have wool covers available in your choice of: Sky Blue, Dark Blue, Cadet Gray, Confederate Gray, Gray Mix, Dark Gray, or Dark Butternut.

#CB404      US "Smooth  side" or Bullseye Canteen Body Only (No Cover and No Sling is provided.)              $94.00

This is the canteen body with the cork and chain attachment. (Specify if you wish to purchase the canteen without the hole for cork and chain on the bracket. We can make them without if you prefer. There will be a short wait as the canteens in stock will have the hole in the bracket.)

#406      US Bullseye Canteen              $110.00

Made from approximately 1862-1864. A war-time improvement of the M1858. It was found that the pressed rings added no strength to the seam area and the experiment was abandoned. However, hundreds of thousands were made. It is really just a variant of the Pattern 1858. The sling bracket does not have a hole for cork and chain. The cork is tied onto the bracket with a cotton string. This canteen is provided with a cork and string, wool cover and cloth sling.
Holds approximately 42oz.

These canteens have wool covers available in your choice of: Sky Blue, Dark Blue, Cadet Gray, Confederate Gray, Gray Mix, Dark Gray, or Dark Butternut.

#LS404      US Leather Canteen Strap              $47.00

The leather canteen strap has been used by the U.S. Army since at least the War of 1812. They were discontinued by the winter of 1862/63. Our reproduction strap is of oil finish leather approx. 73" long and 5/8" wide. The strap utilizes a small roller buckle for adjustment. There is a triangular piece of leather attached behind the buckle to keep it from rubbing your uniform.  These are sold in russet only.

(We do make canteen slings for Confederate use so please be sure to specify for US use when ordering.)
