Canteen Care

* After each use rinse your canteen with warm water and baking soda. Store your canteen with the cork out. This will help prevent rust and corrosion.
* We have not affixed the canteen strap on drum canteens because many wish to paint their canteen. This will also give you the ability to adjust the strap length according to your needs.
* We recommend that you use only distilled water in your canteen. Tap water contains many minerals that will promotes rust rather than prevent it.

Mexican War Canteens

#MX401      US Army Mexican War Tin Canteen              $101.50

Fashioned after the photograph on page 100 in the book The Mexican War, published by Time-Life Books in 1978. This is a tin drum with a convex face containing an embossed "US" in an embossed circle. It has a pewter spout and is furnished with a cork and string stopper and a leather sling. We are now offering these with the correct leather sling for this period.
Holds approximately 32 oz.

The strap in the picture is wrong. Please see information above.

#MX403      Mexican War Tin Drum Canteen              $67.50

This 6" tin drum is exactly the same as the Confederate version. We speak about it here because, as Sylvia and O'Donnell note, excavations of Mexican War sites produce quantities of these canteens. It is an old design probably in use it the English Civil War of the 1660's. Furnished with a cork and string and a cloth sling.
Holds approx. 32oz.

# Mexican War leather sling for the US embossed canteen. $37.50

Federal Regulation Canteens

#404      US Regulation Pattern 1858 "Smooth side" Canteen              $93.00

The first "modern" canteen to be ordered in quantity for the Army. In 1858, 22,000 were authorized to be made with sky blue covers. Wartime production produced sky blue, dark blue, tan and gray covers. A 75" sling, 3/4 inch wide, was specified. (Web slings are not correct for these canteens.) This particular canteen is copied from an original in our collection. The original is sky blue in color with a cork and chain and cotton sling. It has New York Inspector marks.

This reproduction canteen is provided with the cork and chain, wool cover, and cotton sling. (Specify if you wish to purchase the canteen without the hole for cork and chain on the bracket. We can make them without if you prefer. There will be a short wait as the canteens in stock will have the hole in the bracket.)
Holds approximately 42 oz.

These canteens have wool covers available in your choice of: Sky Blue, Dark Blue, Gray Jean, Brown Jean, Cadet Gray, Confederate Gray, Richmond Gray, Gray Mix, Tuscaloosa Gray, Dark Gray, or Dark Butternut.

#404SS   Us Regulation Pattern 1858 "Smooth side" Canteen     $182.25

We have brought these back due to customer request.  These are only stainless steel body and spout ring, the brackets are made with regular tin and so they will rust.  As long as these canteens are covered you can not tell the difference.

#CB404      US "Smooth  side" or Bullseye Canteen Body Only (No Cover and No Sling is provided.)              $74.25

This is the canteen body with the cork and chain attachment. (Specify if you wish to purchase the canteen without the hole for cork and chain on the bracket. We can make them without if you prefer. There will be a short wait as the canteens in stock will have the hole in the bracket.)

#406      US Bullseye Canteen              $93.00

Made from approximately 1862-1864. A war-time improvement of the M1858. It was found that the pressed rings added no strength to the seam area and the experiment was abandoned. However, hundreds of thousands were made. It is really just a variant of the Pattern 1858. The sling bracket does not have a hole for cork and chain. The cork is tied onto the bracket with a cotton string. This canteen is provided with a cork and string, wool cover and cloth sling.
Holds approximately 42oz.

These canteens have wool covers available in your choice of: Sky Blue, Dark Blue, Gray Jean, Brown Jean, Cadet Gray, Confederate Gray, Richmond Gray, Gray Mix, Tuscaloosa Gray, Dark Gray, or Dark Butternut.

#LS404      US Leather Canteen Strap              $35.00

The leather canteen strap has been used by the U.S. Army since at least the War of 1812. They were discontinued by the winter of 1862/63. Our reproduction strap is of oil finish leather approx. 73" long and 5/8" wide. The strap utilizes a small roller buckle for adjustment. There is a triangular piece of leather attached behind the buckle to keep it from rubbing your uniform.  These are sold in russet only.

(We do make canteen slings for Confederate use so please be sure to specify for US use when ordering.)

This is a vastly improved reissue of those we made in the Seventies. Has a cork and string stopper. Furnished with leather sling.
