Blackened Buff
It is hard to find period pieces with the original deep dark black as they would have been when produced at the arsenal. When the Ordnance Dept. made the change from “whitened” buff to the dyed black version or “blackened buff", there was some trouble getting the existing stock to take the black dye. The solution to the problem was to remove the whiteners before dyeing.
There were two different ways of finishing the blackened buff. The first was a high shine, and the second was a dusty black. The dusty black was the one adopted due to the fact that it was cheaper to finish. We do know that there were some of the shiny blackened buff made and there should be some surviving examples, but I not found any as of yet.

Remember that no matter how bad the day is there is always one bright spot and he is Christ 2 Corinthian 12:9&10 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.
