Gum Blanket

We are now offering the Stevens pattern rubber blanket.

We have changed our stock rubber blankets to this pattern so you can use the #WP322 Button for closure.

#319      Gum Blanket              $96.25

During the 1850s a great deal of experimentation with various materials for military equipment led to the decision that gum rubber was quite a fine material for many purposes. Goodyear's earlier patent for the vulcanization of rubber made the gum (or gum rubber) blanket a natural for the Civil War armies. The rubber blanket and its derivative, the poncho, saw service until near WWI, and then, with little change except for the color, went through the Great War and beyond. Many soldiers carried two, if they could get them. Not only are they useful as ground cloths, or to make into "shebangs" (Civil War soldier term for shelter), they are good rainwear when draped over the body and tied or buttoned in front.
Can be marked with either Federal or Confederate maker marks.
Our rubber blanket utilizes Goodyear's vulcanization technique, as did the originals, to produce an article which is at once authentic and useful.
We have one of the only vulcanized products on the market today; it is also the least expensive and the highest quality.

Gum Blanket Button

#WP322        Gum Blanket Buttons

We are selling these in set of two. . . . . . . . . . . . .  $6.00 per pair

We have tried several times to get these buttons made over the years and we have finally gotten them.  This button is an extremely valuable item to own.  It allows you to convert your gum blanket into a poncho.   These were not issued with the gum blanket but by the number of ads shown in Harper Weekly they must have been quite popular with the soldiers.

Poncho

#320      Poncho              $104.25

While the foot soldiers were to be issued the gum blanket, the mounted troops were to receive the poncho, which is the same thing except with a neck opening and a waterproof collar affixed. Like most things military in that era, terminology became confused and nearly everything was called a "Gum" or "Gum Blanket". It seems that the things were used indiscriminately whether it was a poncho or a blanket mattered little. So, take your choice. Our poncho is made with the same process as the gum blanket. It is not a kit. It is ready to use. These ponchos have proven to be the best on the market since we started making them about 15 years ago. Compare them with the competition and see. These can be marked with Federal or Confederate contractors' marks, if desired.

Size: 46" X 71" Grommet Size: 9/16" outside, 1/4" center opening.
