Little wonder that the Confederacy used US M1858 type forage caps! Of the eight officers on board which approved the design for the US Army in 1858, at least five became Confederate soldiers. This cap can be ordered in a variety of colors to coordinate with your uniform. May also be ordered in the two-color types, either Early War with the top of service branch color and a dark blue band around the bottom, or in the style with the service branch color band. These wool forage caps have a polished cotton lining, leather sweatband, leather bill and chin strap with brass slide. The forage cap has a high crown with a tall body meant to fall forward. They have harness leather bills and chin straps with the correct brass slide. They have a pasteboard crown reinforcement and polished cotton linings with leather sweatbands. The forage cap has a welt around the top circle and across the top part of the bill the same color as the hat.

It was from common felt hats such as this that the great variety of slouch hats were individually molded by the soldiers who wore them. Made of wool felt in tan, gray or black. The brim is left flat so that you may shape it as you please. The crown may be creased or reshaped to your liking. With sweatband.
